There is an old saying that it takes a village to raise a child. Unfortunately, our modern age has taken that village away for a lot of people living in the United States. More and more people are living outside their hometowns and away from family when they start to have children. Without that village in place, pregnant women don’t always have the depth of knowledge about pregnancy, birth and raising a newborn that generations before them by being part of an extensive community. A lot of the time new mothers aren’t getting the support that they need.
There is a large focus placed on babies and less of a focus placed on the mother. Sadly, maternal mortality in Texas is still high. A recent article in Reform Austin explored the issue and spoke with our founder, Gabriela Gerhart about the issue. She believes that we need to start recreating the village by increasing education and building support systems around women as they enter into motherhood. One of the goals of the Motherhood Center is to do exactly that. With the right education around everything from birth to postpartum care, women are able to be their own advocates. Armed with the proper information they have a better idea of what is normal and when to seek medical help.
