I felt compelled to blog this week on a very important topic that keeps popping up on my radar screen and that should be of the utmost concern to all new mothers: the new trend of obesity in infants.

Children are becoming more and more overweight at younger and younger ages. Why is this happening?

One of the biggest culprits is High Fructose Corn Syrup in baby formula.

Shocked?

Why?

It’s in everything else we feed our kids from pre-packaged snacks to sodas. I recently discovered it’s even in tonic water! Since growing corn is subsidized by the U.S. government, it’s readily available in excess and cheap to use. Unfortunately, it’s also genetically modified and making our kids sick.

The food industry has found a way to extract syrup from corn biochemically and then manipulate the percentage of fructose in this syrup. (https://www.parenting.com/article/corn-syrup-in-formula)

As a result, our body doesn’t recognize it like it would fructose from fruit or lactose from breast milk. Our brain and body never get the signal that we’re full, so we keep eating!

This is causing a new dangerous trend of obesity in infants, not to mention setting them up for diabetes and other health problems in the future.

When choosing a formula, it’s best to pick an Organic formula like Organic Similac. Stay away from the Soy (also genetically modified) formulas and Lactose Free versions. Try to go with a Milk- based formula if possible and READ THOSE LABELS! Be an advocate for your child and their health. If you aren’t, who will be?
